Weather
Although Amsterdam weather is best described as mild and pleasant, it is also somewhat unpredictable. It might start out as a bright sunny day which clouds over later on to become a thunderstorm. With the frequency of rain in between sunny periods, the best travel accessory for Amsterdam is a good pack of rain-gear.
To be fair, it rains more often in Spring or Autumn than in the other months. While the temperature is comfortable and soothing, staying at a cool 9 – 14 degrees Celsius, it does rain close to 100+ mm in just these two seasons.
Summers are breezy and comfortable – you can walk around in sandals and don your favorite t-shirt at such times (temperatures range from 20 – 25 degrees Celsius). However, do carry around a jacket as nightfall can bring in cooler winds.
In Winter, you never actually feel freezing cold in Amsterdam. In fact, the temperature hardly falls below 0 degrees Celsius. However, be sure to layer up in warm clothes because the frequent rains can bring in quite a few biting winds .
Whether you are coming here for fun and adventure, a relaxing holiday or to soak up the local culture, Amsterdam is perfect all round the year. Here’s a heads up though; July-August (summer) as well as December is the peak tourist season and hence prices will be high (e.g. airline fares, hotel rates, eating out) and the streets will be just a tad busier. On the other hand, try the period from the end of October to early March for the lower rates.
Do keep in mind that some events are specific to various seasons. Hence, it might be a good idea to note them while planning your trip. Examples of seasonal events – Keukenhof in March, music festivals (July – August) or cultural events in November.
