Red Light District

The Red Light District is not the only attraction in Amsterdam but it definitely is one of its most famous examples.

The main street for the Red Light District is De Wallen. This area is basically a mish-mash of brightly-lit alleys. This bit is located just south of the Central Station (in fact between Central Station and Nieuwenmaarkt). The smaller areas are in Singel and De Pijp.

As much as you’ve heard lots about Red Light District, here’s a brief mention of what makes up this popular tourist attraction. There are of course, the famous live sex shows, peep-show booths and sex shops that sell everything from books, magazines, toys to accessories.

Here are a few tips on what to look out for. Firstly, don’t take pictures of the women in Red Light District – it is banned and the bouncers will take you aside to have a quiet chat. Secondly, don’t buy any soft drugs off the street here. Thirdly, keep an eye out for pickpockets. This is a good warning for areas outside Red Light District as well but it’s also more likely to happen in some place bustling with people.
